Vowel Duration in Scottish English Speaking Children
نویسندگان
چکیده
In most English accents vowel length is approximately 50% greater before a voiced consonant than before its voiceless cognate (the ‘Voicing Effect’). In Scottish English it is conditioned by the ‘Scottish Vowel Length Rule’. The lengthening environments of this rule overlap with those of the Voicing Effect. The phonetic details of the Scottish Vowel Length Rule and its relationship with the Voicing Effect are uncertain. Its influence on the speech of younger speakers is also not known. In this study, tokens of /i/ and /¬/ were measured in minimal pairs produced by seven Scottish English speaking children aged 6-9 years. Some pairs tested for a Voicing Effect, others for a Scottish Vowel Length effect. Results suggested a robust Scottish Vowel Length pattern for four of the subjects, with a minimal Voicing Effect. However, in children with two non-Scottish English speaking parents this pattern was either absent or less definite.

Onset-rime coarticulation in the production of /dai/ and /stai/ by four-year-old Scottish English speaking children: preliminary results
Patterns of coarticulation between onset and rime in the speech of six Scottish English speaking children aged 4 years is examined in the words dye /dai/ and sty /stai/. F2 is 272Hz lower at the burst following /st/ than following /d/. The lower F2 after /st/ in the onset-rime transition is accompanied by a higher F2 during /ai/’s diphthongal offglide. Moreover, the overall shapes of the F2 tra...
متن کاملVowel Duration and Spectral Balance in Scottish English and Russian
This is a cross-linguistic study into the effect of extrinsic vowel duration conditioning on the realisation of spectral balance (intensity distribution above 0.5 kHz) in Scottish English and Russian. The materials consisted of monosyllabic words containing the vowel /i/ in prominent syllables, with varied right consonantal context in order to trigger extrinsic vowel duration conditioning. Resu...
متن کاملAcquisition of vowel duration in children speaking american English
This study is an acoustic investigation of the acquisition of vowel duration in children speaking American English. The primary goal was to find out when and how children begin to produce different vowel durations as a function of postvocalic voicing. A total of 803 longitudinal data extracted from the Providence Corpus were analyzed. The age range covered by the data was from 0;11 to 4;0. The ...
متن کاملSpeech rates of New Zealand English- and American English-speaking children
Adult speakers of New Zealand English demonstrate faster speaking rates than adult speakers of Australian, American, or British English. Little, however, is known about comparability of speaking rates in children who speak different varieties of English. This study begins to address this need through examining articulation rate and overall speaking rate data for ten New Zealand English-speaking...
متن کاملCoarticulation as an indicator of speech motor control development in children: an ultrasound study.
There are still crucial gaps in our knowledge about developmental paths taken by children to adult-like speech motor control. Mature control of articulators during speaking is manifested in the appropriate extent of coarticulation (the articulatory overlap of speech sounds). This study compared lingual coarticulatory properties of child and adult speech, using ultrasound tongue imaging. The par...
